Periodicals include journals, newspapers, magazines, annals, newsletters, and anything that is published on a continual and regular basis.
Periodicals (except for cataloged titles) are located on the mobile shelves to the right of the entrance to the Marine Resources Library (MRL).
-
Current Week’s Journals: On Monday morning all journal issues received in the previous week are placed on the counter-height shelves located in the reading area. The issues will remain there for one week for review. After one week, the issues are shelved with the displayed journals or the bound periodicals as appropriate.
-
Displayed Journals: The current issue of many journals is shelved in alphabetical order by title on the display shelves in the reading area. If the current issue is displayed, the note “Current issue on display” will be included in the holdings statement in the online catalog.
-
Periodical Stacks: Print (including bound volumes and all unbound issues-- except for displayed issues), microfilm, and microfiche formats of periodicals are shelved together in the periodical stacks.
All periodicals are organized in alphabetical order by the title of the periodical.
There are some basic filing rules for all periodicals:
-
Ignore the words "A," "An," and "The" at the beginning of titles.
Don't ignore "a," "an," and "the" as a part of the alphabetical title when these words appear in the middle of a title.
-
Titles that begin with an abbreviation or acronym, such as DNR Outdoor Report, are shelved at the very beginning of that letter. For example, DNR Outdoor Report is shelved before Deep Sea Research.
-
Periodicals issues that are at the bindery are identified by a shelf note in the periodical stacks giving the anticipated return date. If the needed issue is at the bindery, check our electronic journals since we may also have an electronic subscription to the title.
-
If a page is missing (torn out or mutilated), please report it to the staff. In many cases, replacement pages are available from the publisher.
If you cannot locate a periodical listed as owned, please ask any staff member to assist you or email mrlcirc@cofc.edu .
If you need a periodical that the library does not own, please submit an interlibrary loan request.
If you still need help, please contact the librarian at 843-953-9370 or submit an Ask the Librarian a Question form online.
